History of The Plantation Store
It all started with Bill (King Kapisi) meeting a dude at his weekly basketball run who was teaching screen printing at a local high school for adult students. He hung out with him one day at school and the brother showed him the process of making a tee from graphic design to screen printing.
A few weeks after the tee making session, an editor who was working with me on television work knew we were interested in screen printing and had a friend who was selling their complete set up for a very good price. With a lot of family budgeting we bought it with payments by installments and that is how Plantation Printing started.
At the time everything was set up in our garage at home. We live in an old farm house that is over 100 years old and the electrical wiring was in the same condition as the house, old. So after losing patience with the power always cutting out whenever we printed while trying to cook dinner, we decided to find a place offsite to screen print and design. We found the space just around the corner from our home. We built the store from nothing and I spent a lot of time reading and learning about the business and creative side of the industry.
We ran the shop for two years but eventually had to close it as the printing jobs we carried out required us to be there until usually 2am most nights, which left very little time for our family.
We decided before we closed the shop we would start an online store, which we also built ourselves. You are reading this on it. This e-store has been a long time coming.
Overstayer Clothing is hand screen printed by either myself (Teremoana), Bill (King Kapisi) or one of our family members. Therefore, there are limited runs of prints released each season.
